Am I Eligible?

You may be eligible for the free NHS contraceptive service if you:

Are from your first period (menarche) up to age 49 for the Combined Oral Contraceptive (COC), or up to age 54 for the Progestogen-Only Pill (POP)

Want to start, restart or continue taking the contraceptive pill

Are not currently pregnant

Are registered with a GP in England

Who Is Not Eligible?

You will not be able to use this service if:

You are pregnant or think you may be

You have had serious side effects from the pill in the past

You have certain medical conditions, such as: 

Current breast cancer

Severe liver disease

Uncontrolled high blood pressure

History of stroke or blood clots

You smoke and are aged 35 or over (for the combined pill)

1. Who is eligible for this service?

This service is available to anyone from menarche up to age 49 (for the combined pill) or age 54 (for the progestogen-only pill), who is seeking to start, restart, or continue oral contraception.

2. Is the service free?

Yes — this is a free NHS service. There is no charge for the consultation or the supply of the contraceptive pill if you are eligible.

3. Do I need to see my GP first?

No GP referral is needed. You can book directly with us for both initiating and continuing your contraceptive pill.

4. What happens during the consultation?

You’ll meet with one of our experienced pharmacist in a private consultation room. They will review your medical history, check your eligibility, and supply the pill if appropriate.

5. How long does the appointment take?

Initiation or restart appointments can take up to 30 minutes. Repeat supplies normally take 10-15 minutes. Repeat supply reviews: 10–15 minutes

6. Do I need to bring anything with me?

Yes. Please bring a list of any medications you’re currently taking, your recent blood pressure and weight measurements (if available) and any previous contraception history

7. Can I switch from my current GP prescription to this service?

Yes. If you're eligible, we can take over the supply of your pill without needing a GP appointment.

8. What if I’m not suitable for this service?

If you're not eligible for any reason, we will explain why and refer you to an appropriate healthcare provider.

9. Is my information kept confidential?

Yes. All consultations are strictly confidential and carried out in a private room by qualified healthcare professionals.

10. Can I walk in, or do I have to book?

This service is strictly appointment based.
