What is Influenza?
Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a highly contagious respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses. It can affect people of all ages and can lead to a wide range of symptoms, including fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue, body aches, and more. The flu can vary in severity from mild to severe, and it can lead to hospitalization and, in some cases, death.
Frequently Asked Questions
I had a winter flu jab last year, do I need to get one this year?
Yes, even if you had the flu jab last year, it’s essential to get vaccinated again this year. The flu virus is constantly changing, and the vaccine is reformulated each year to match the new strains. Receiving the jab annually ensures you are protected against the latest strains of the virus.
Are there any side effects of the winter flu jab?
Most people experience no or only mild side effects from the flu vaccine. Common side effects include soreness or redness at the injection site, a slight temperature, or feeling a bit achy or tired for a day or two. These symptoms usually pass quickly. Serious side effects are extremely rare, and the benefits of getting vaccinated far outweigh the risks. If you have any concerns please don't hesitate to talk to us before you receive the jab.
When can I book my flu vaccine appointment this year?
You can book your flu vaccine appointment from September if you're seeking a private vaccination. For those eligible for a free NHS flu jab, appointments will be available from 3rd October. It’s advisable to book as soon as possible in the Autumn or early Winter to ensure you receive your vaccination ahead of the peak flu season, however you can still be vaccinated later than this to ensure you stay protected for the remainder of the winter.

Can I get a free flu jab?
Yes, you may be eligible for a free flu jab through the NHS if you are at higher risk of serious illness from the flu. This includes individuals aged 65 or over, those with certain long-term health conditions, pregnant women, residents of care homes, and those who care for older or disabled people. Additionally, people living with someone who has a weakened immune system and frontline health and social care workers can also receive the free NHS flu jab. NHS flu appointments are available from 3rd October.
How Can You Contract Influenza?
Influenza is primarily spread through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. You can contract the virus by inhaling these droplets or by touching surfaces or objects that have the virus on them and then touching your face, particularly your mouth, nose, or eyes.
How is Influenza Treated?
Treatment for influenza typically involves managing the symptoms. Rest, hydration, and over-the-counter medications like pain relievers and decongestants can help ease discomfort. Antiviral medications may be prescribed in some cases to reduce the severity and duration of the illness, especially in high-risk individuals.
How to Prevent Influenza?
The best way to prevent influenza is by getting an annual flu vaccine. Good hygiene practices, such as regular handwashing, covering your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and avoiding close contact with sick individuals, also play a crucial role in prevention. If you're at high risk of complications or have been exposed to someone with the flu, consult a healthcare professional for guidance on antiviral medications.
